Brain zaps for fibromyalgia: small study hopes to find pain relief

NCT ID NCT07260864

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study will test a treatment called rTMS, which uses magnetic pulses to stimulate parts of the brain, in 20 women with fibromyalgia. The goal is to see if stimulating the motor cortex changes brain activity and reduces pain. Researchers will use MRI scans to compare effects on the left and right sides of the brain.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a non-drug treatment for fibromyalgia pain by showing which side of the brain to stimulate.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early study with only 20 people, so results may not apply to everyone. It also only looks at brain changes, not long-term pain relief.
