Could a simple vaccine slash COPD attacks?

NCT ID NCT07508644

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a single dose of the RSV vaccine (Arexvy) can reduce moderate-to-severe COPD flare-ups in people who have frequent attacks. Researchers will enroll 320 high-risk patients aged 50+ and follow them for one year. Half will get the vaccine plus standard care, the other half standard care alone.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

RSV vaccine (Arexvy)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could reduce the number of serious COPD flare-ups by at least 20%, offering a new way to manage the disease.

What could go wrong

This is a Phase 4 trial, but it's open-label (no placebo), which can bias results. The 20% reduction target is modest, and the vaccine may not work for everyone.
