Cold virus turned cancer killer: new hope for liver cancer patients?
NCT ID NCT05733598
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a genetically modified herpes virus (RP2) that infects and destroys cancer cells while also stimulating the immune system. It is given alone or together with standard drugs (bevacizumab, atezolizumab, or durvalumab) to 60 adults with advanced liver or bile duct cancer that has worsened after initial treatment. The goal is to see if the combination shrinks tumors and how safe it is.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- RP2 (a modified herpes virus that attacks tumors and boosts the immune system), given alone or with bevacizumab, atezolizumab, or durvalumab
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could offer a new second-line treatment option for people with advanced liver or bile duct cancer that has not responded to initial therapy.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early phase 2 trial with only 60 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The virus-based therapy can cause flu-like symptoms, injection site reactions, and other immune-related side effects.
