Statins for stronger bones? study in spinal injury patients falls short

NCT ID NCT03113994

First seen Apr 17, 2026 · Last updated May 09, 2026 · Updated 3 times

Summary

This study aimed to see if rosuvastatin, a common cholesterol-lowering drug, could help prevent bone loss and reduce heart disease risk in adults with long-term spinal cord injury. Participants were randomly assigned to take either rosuvastatin or a placebo for 12 months, along with calcium, vitamin D, and coenzyme Q10. The study was terminated early and enrolled only 8 of the planned 54 participants, so no firm conclusions can be drawn.
