Could a pregnancy complication leave lasting damage to blood vessels? new study investigates

NCT ID NCT06547619

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at why women who had gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy) often have higher heart disease risk years later. Researchers will test how a natural chemical called endothelin-1 affects small blood vessels in 40 women who had a baby within the last 5 years. They will also see if physical activity or sitting too much plays a role. The goal is to understand the problem better, not to test a new treatment.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could reveal why women with prior gestational diabetes have higher heart disease risk, pointing toward future prevention strategies.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early-phase study (40 participants) that measures short-term responses in skin blood vessels, not long-term outcomes. Results may not apply to all women or lead directly to treatments.
