Robotic lung biopsies without full anesthesia? small study tests feasibility

NCT ID NCT07006311

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This pilot study at the University of Zurich is testing whether robotic-assisted bronchoscopy can be performed under moderate sedation with propofol, rather than general anesthesia. Currently, robotic bronchoscopy requires full anesthesia, but standard bronchoscopy often uses lighter sedation. The study will enroll 30 adults scheduled for bronchoscopy to see if the robotic approach works safely and effectively under propofol. It is an early feasibility test, not a treatment study.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

propofol

What this could lead to

If successful, this could make robotic bronchoscopy more widely available by avoiding the need for general anesthesia.

What could go wrong

This is a very small pilot study (30 people) testing feasibility only. It may not work as well as hoped, and larger studies are needed.
