Special camera peers inside airways to reveal COVID-19's effect on lung blood vessels

NCT ID NCT04884061

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study uses a special bronchoscopy technique called narrow band imaging to look at blood vessel patterns in the airways of people with COVID-19. Researchers will compare images from three groups: patients with COVID-19, patients with other lung infections, and patients with lung nodules. The goal is to see if COVID-19 causes unique changes in the tiny blood vessels of the bronchial tree.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If distinct vessel patterns are found, this could help doctors better understand how COVID-19 affects the lungs and possibly guide future diagnosis or treatment.

What could go wrong

This is a small, observational study with only 30 participants. It describes patterns but does not test any treatment, so it may not lead to direct clinical changes.
