Simple cuff therapy may boost brain blood flow after stroke

NCT ID NCT06170944

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a simple, non-invasive treatment called remote ischemic preconditioning (RIC) can improve blood flow around blocked arteries in people who have had a stroke. RIC involves inflating a blood pressure cuff on the arms for short periods to trigger the body's natural protective responses. The trial will enroll 300 stroke patients with large artery blockages and follow them for one year to see if RIC improves collateral circulation and reduces stroke recurrence.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

remote ischemic preconditioning (RIC) using a blood pressure cuff

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide a simple, low-cost way to improve blood flow around blocked arteries in stroke patients, potentially reducing the risk of another stroke.

What could go wrong

This is a mid-stage trial with 300 participants, and the treatment is an add-on to standard care. The effect on collateral blood flow may not translate to fewer strokes, and the cuff inflation may cause discomfort or bruising.
