Steam treatment for enlarged prostate goes Head-to-Head with surgery

NCT ID NCT07587333

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compared two treatments for an enlarged prostate (BPH): a newer steam-based procedure called Rezum and a standard surgery called TUEP. Researchers measured how well each improved urinary symptoms, urine flow, and sexual function in 70 men over age 50. The goal was to see if the less invasive steam treatment could match surgery's effectiveness with fewer complications.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Rezum (convective radio-frequency water vapor energy) and TUEP (transurethral enucleation of the prostate)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that a less invasive steam procedure works as well as surgery for relieving BPH symptoms, with fewer side effects.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study with only 70 men. Results may not apply to everyone, and both procedures carry risks like infection or sexual side effects.
