Steam vs laser: which is better for an enlarged prostate?

NCT ID NCT07578428

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares two minimally invasive procedures for men with an enlarged prostate that has a median lobe—a part that can block urine flow. One treatment uses water vapor (steam) to shrink tissue, the other uses a laser. Eighty men will be randomly assigned to one of the two treatments. The main goal is to see which one improves urinary symptoms more over six months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Water vapor therapy (Rezūm) and transperineal laser ablation (EchoLaser)

What this could lead to

If one treatment proves better, it could offer men with an enlarged prostate a more effective, less invasive option with fewer side effects.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 80 participants. Results may not apply to all men, and both treatments carry risks like infection or urinary problems.
