Simple breathing workouts before lung surgery may cut complications
NCT ID NCT07499986
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether doing special breathing exercises for a few weeks before lung cancer surgery can reduce problems like pneumonia and help patients leave the hospital sooner. 70 people scheduled for lung cancer surgery will be randomly assigned to standard care or standard care plus breathing training. The exercises use a small device that makes the muscles you use to breathe in and out work harder.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Inspiratory and expiratory muscle training using a threshold device (PowerBreathe Classic)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could lead to a simple, low-cost way to reduce lung complications and shorten hospital stays after lung cancer surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 70 participants. The benefits of expiratory training have never been studied before, so results are uncertain.
