POTS puzzle: scientists probe blood pressure hormone link
NCT ID NCT00962949
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This completed Phase 1 study at Vanderbilt University looked at how the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system works in people with POTS, a condition that causes a rapid heart rate and dizziness upon standing. Researchers gave 28 participants (including healthy controls) a one-hour infusion of angiotensin II to measure changes in blood pressure and hormone levels. The goal was to better understand the disease process, not to test a new treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Angiotensin II
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could help explain why people with POTS have trouble regulating blood pressure and heart rate when standing.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study with only 28 participants, so results may not apply to everyone with POTS. It is designed to understand the disease, not to test a treatment.
