Can less therapy at home match intensive autism treatment?
NCT ID NCT04660669
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares a semi-intensive therapy program (8 hours per week at a center plus online parent training) to the standard intensive program (15 hours per week) for young children with autism. The goal is to see if the remote approach works just as well for improving development and reducing autism symptoms. The trial plans to enroll 90 children aged 15 to 36 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) behavioral therapy
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could offer a more accessible and less intensive therapy option for families with young autistic children, reducing the need for frequent center visits.
- What could go wrong
- This is a noninferiority trial, meaning it aims to show the remote approach is not worse than intensive therapy, but it may still be less effective for some children. The study is not yet recruiting and has a small sample size of 90.
