Eye ultrasound may reveal best drug to shield brain during aneurysm surgery
NCT ID NCT07660861
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This trial tests whether remifentanil or esmolol is better at preventing dangerous pressure spikes in the brain when a breathing tube is inserted. Patients with unruptured brain aneurysms scheduled for coil embolization will receive one of the two drugs before intubation. Researchers will use an eye ultrasound to measure changes in brain pressure, aiming to find the safest approach.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Remifentanil and Esmolol
What this could lead to
If one drug works better, it could become the preferred choice to protect the brain during intubation for aneurysm patients.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study measuring a surrogate marker (eye ultrasound) rather than direct brain outcomes, so results may not translate to better patient recovery.
