Which anesthesia gets you home faster after vein surgery?

NCT ID NCT07297082

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compared two ways to numb the leg for outpatient vein ablation surgery: a femoral nerve block (injecting lidocaine near the groin) and low-dose spinal anesthesia (injecting bupivacaine into the spine). Forty adults aged 18-80 with mild to moderate health status took part. The main goal was to see which method allows patients to go home sooner after surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

lidocaine (femoral nerve block) and bupivacaine (spinal anesthesia)

What this could lead to

If one method proves better, it could help patients leave the hospital faster after vein surgery with fewer side effects.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study (40 people) comparing two established techniques, so it won't lead to a new treatment—just possibly a preferred approach.
