Pre-Surgery drug cocktail aims to wipe out rectal cancer
NCT ID NCT01871571
First seen Jul 01, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026
Summary
This trial investigates whether giving a combination of bevacizumab (a drug that blocks blood vessel growth to tumors) and chemotherapy before surgery can eliminate all signs of cancer in people with stage II or III rectal cancer. Participants receive the treatment before their planned surgery, and researchers check if the cancer is completely gone in the removed tissue. The goal is to see if this approach leads to better long-term outcomes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
bevacizumab (Avastin) plus chemotherapy (fluorouracil, leucovorin calcium, oxaliplatin)
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could become a standard treatment to shrink rectal tumors before surgery, potentially improving survival and reducing recurrence.
What could go wrong
This is a small phase II trial, so results may not apply to all patients. Side effects from chemotherapy and bevacizumab can be serious, and the treatment may not work for everyone.
