Could reusing your own blood during bypass surgery reduce transfusions?

NCT ID NCT06358079

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether collecting and re-infusing unwashed shed blood during off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery can reduce the need for donor blood transfusions and lower complications. Fifty adults undergoing this surgery will have their shed blood returned via a special circuit. Researchers will measure blood loss, transfusion needs, inflammation, and heart and brain markers.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Re-infusion of unwashed shed blood via a cardiotomy circuit
What this could lead to
If successful, this could reduce the need for donor blood transfusions and lower complications during heart surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study (50 participants) with no control group, so results may not be conclusive. Re-infusing unwashed blood carries risks of inflammation or other side effects.
