New heat treatment could zap small breast tumors without surgery

NCT ID NCT04389216

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tested a device that uses heat (radiofrequency ablation) to destroy small breast tumors (less than 2 cm). Thirty women with early-stage breast cancer received the treatment to see if it could safely eliminate the tumor. The goal was to find a less invasive option than standard surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Radiofrequency ablation device (cool-tip electrode)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a less invasive treatment option for small breast tumors, potentially reducing the need for surgery.

What could go wrong

This was a small, early-stage study with only 30 participants. The results may not apply to all breast cancer patients, and there is a risk of incomplete tumor destruction or side effects from the procedure.
