New acid blocker may beat standard drug for Post-Banding ulcers in cirrhosis

NCT ID NCT07608536

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This phase 3 trial tests whether vonoprazan, a newer acid-blocking drug, is better than rabeprazole at preventing ulcers and bleeding after endoscopic variceal band ligation (EVL) in people with cirrhosis. About 300 adults with esophageal varices will take one of the two drugs daily for two weeks. After treatment, doctors will use an endoscope to measure ulcer size and count. The goal is to see which drug more effectively reduces ulcer-related complications.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Vonoprazan and Rabeprazole

What this could lead to

If vonoprazan works better, it could offer a more effective way to prevent bleeding ulcers after variceal band ligation in people with cirrhosis.

What could go wrong

This is a phase 3 trial, but it's still early to know if vonoprazan is truly better. The study only follows patients for 2 weeks, so long-term benefits or risks are not assessed.
