New flu vaccine for seniors enters safety testing

NCT ID NCT07421037

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This early-stage trial is testing the safety of a new quadrivalent influenza vaccine with an adjuvant (a booster ingredient) in adults aged 65 and older. Eighty participants will receive either the new vaccine, a standard flu vaccine, or a placebo. The study monitors side effects over 12 months to see if the vaccine is safe for this age group.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Quadrivalent subunit influenza vaccine with adjuvant (MF59)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a safer, more effective flu vaccine for older adults, who are at higher risk of severe flu complications.

What could go wrong

This is an early Phase 1 trial with only 80 participants, focused on safety, not effectiveness. The vaccine may not provide better protection than existing flu shots, and side effects are still being evaluated.
