Period pads could replace pap smears: At-Home HPV test under study
NCT ID NCT07281599
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jul 24, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study is testing whether a special menstrual pad, called the Q-Pad, can accurately detect high-risk HPV from menstrual blood collected at home. About 450 people who need a colposcopy after an abnormal Pap or HPV test will use the pad during their period and mail it to a lab. The results will be compared to standard cervical samples and biopsies to see if the at-home test is reliable and easy to use.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Q-Pad hrHPV Test System (a menstrual pad with a removable collection strip for at-home sampling)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could offer a convenient, at-home way to screen for cervical precancer, potentially increasing screening access and early detection.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-stage study with 450 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The test's accuracy compared to standard methods is still unproven, and home collection errors could affect reliability.
