New PTH test could Fine-Tune mineral balance in kidney dialysis

NCT ID NCT02859220

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether a new method of measuring parathyroid hormone (PTH) can help doctors better manage calcium and phosphate levels in people on hemodialysis. About 80 patients with end-stage kidney disease will be randomly assigned to have their PTH measured either with the standard test or with a newer test that distinguishes between active and inactive PTH fragments. The goal is to see if the new test helps patients more easily meet international targets for calcium, phosphorus, and related minerals.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
PTH 1-84 Complete (CAP) and ratio PTH 1-84/7-84 measurement
What this could lead to
If successful, this could improve how doctors adjust treatment for calcium and phosphate imbalances in dialysis patients, helping them meet health targets more easily.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study focused on testing a measurement method, not a treatment. The new test may not lead to better patient outcomes or may be too complex for routine use.
