First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This phase 2 trial will test whether giving psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) along with group cognitive behavioral therapy is acceptable and feasible for people with major depression. Thirty adults with current depressive symptoms will receive two doses of psilocybin (10 mg and 25 mg) plus 12 group therapy sessions. The study will measure satisfaction, retention, and changes in depression severity.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

psilocybin (a psychedelic drug) combined with cognitive behavioral therapy (a type of talk therapy)

What this could lead to

If this works, it could point toward a new treatment option for major depression that combines a psychedelic drug with group therapy.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 30 people, so results may not apply to everyone. Psilocybin can cause intense psychological effects and is not yet approved for depression.
