New proton therapy trial aims to spare immune system in cervical cancer
NCT ID NCT07298642
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares proton therapy to standard photon radiation for cervical cancer patients who need extended-field radiation. The goal is to see if proton therapy causes less severe lymphopenia (low white blood cell count) and fewer side effects. About 44 participants with advanced cervical cancer will be enrolled, and researchers will monitor immune cells and treatment toxicities.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Proton radiation therapy
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that proton therapy is a better option for cervical cancer patients needing extended-field radiation, potentially reducing side effects and improving survival.
What could go wrong
This is a mid-stage trial with only 44 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Proton therapy is not widely available and may not prove significantly better than standard treatment.
