New combo aims to wipe out aggressive prostate tumors before surgery
NCT ID NCT05593497
First seen Mar 28, 2026 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 13 times
Summary
This phase 2 trial tests whether adding the targeted drug capivasertib to standard hormone therapy (abiraterone and leuprolide) before prostate removal surgery can shrink or destroy high-risk prostate cancers that have a PTEN gene loss. About 30 men with localized but aggressive prostate cancer will receive the drug combination for 16 weeks, then undergo surgery. The main goal is to see if the cancer is completely gone or reduced to a very small amount in the removed prostate.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Capivasertib (a targeted drug) combined with abiraterone and leuprolide (hormone therapy)
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could shrink or eliminate high-risk prostate tumors before surgery, potentially improving long-term outcomes for patients with PTEN loss.
What could go wrong
This is a small early-phase trial with only 30 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The drug combination may cause side effects, and it is not yet proven to be better than standard care.
