Major trial seeks to end debate on ventilator strategies for kids
NCT ID NCT03896763
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two breathing support strategies—prone positioning and high-frequency ventilation—against standard care in 600 children with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome. The goal is to see which approach helps children spend more days off a ventilator within 28 days. The trial is active but no longer recruiting, and results may guide future pediatric intensive care.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
prone positioning and high-frequency oscillatory ventilation
What this could lead to
If it works, this could establish a better standard of care for children with severe lung failure, reducing time on breathing machines.
What could go wrong
This is a late-stage trial but still compares existing techniques; the benefit may be small or not apply to all children. No new drug is being tested.
