Stem cell therapy aims to save Insulin-Making cells in new diabetes patients
NCT ID NCT00690066
First seen Mar 23, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 6 times
Summary
This study tested whether multiple infusions of a stem cell product called PROCHYMAL could safely help preserve the body's ability to make insulin in people recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The trial enrolled 63 participants aged 12 to 35 who had been diagnosed within the past 20 weeks. The main goal was to see if the treatment could maintain or improve C-peptide levels, a marker of insulin production, compared to a placebo.
