Gum disease showdown: probiotics vs. mouthwash in diabetes patients

NCT ID NCT07489924

First seen Apr 03, 2026 · Last updated May 03, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study tests whether a probiotic (Lactobacillus reuteri) is as good as a standard mouthwash (chlorhexidine) at reducing harmful bacteria in people with both gum disease and type 2 diabetes. Twenty adults will use one of the treatments for 30 days, and researchers will measure bacteria levels in gum fluid. The goal is to find a gentler option for managing gum disease in diabetic patients.
