Probiotics may tame cancer Drug's gut side effects
NCT ID NCT06892093
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether taking probiotics can prevent severe diarrhea in women with HER2-positive breast cancer who are treated with neratinib. About 308 participants will be randomly assigned to receive either probiotics or a placebo for six weeks, alongside standard diarrhea prevention medication. The goal is to see if probiotics reduce the severity and frequency of diarrhea, helping patients stay on their cancer treatment with fewer side effects.

What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, safe way to prevent severe diarrhea in breast cancer patients taking neratinib, improving their quality of life.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage trial with no phase designation, so results are uncertain. Probiotics may not reduce diarrhea, and individual responses can vary.
