New combo treatment may sharpen vision in keratoconus patients

NCT ID NCT07372911

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether combining a laser vision correction (PRK) with corneal cross-linking improves eyesight and corneal shape better than cross-linking alone in people with keratoconus, a condition that thins and bulges the cornea. Fifty adults aged 18-40 with mild to moderate keratoconus will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. The main goal is to see if the combination leads to better corrected vision after one year.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Excimer laser (PRK) and riboflavin-UVA cross-linking

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could offer better vision correction and corneal stability for people with keratoconus, potentially reducing the need for glasses or contact lenses.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 50 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Risks include corneal haze, infection, or no significant improvement over standard treatment.
