Promising new eye treatment could halt vision loss from keratoconus
NCT ID NCT06100939
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This phase 3 trial tested a new way to treat keratoconus, a condition where the cornea thins and bulges, causing blurry vision. The treatment uses special eye drops and ultraviolet light to strengthen the cornea without removing its outer layer. 396 people aged 8 to 45 took part to see if this approach can safely stop the disease from getting worse and improve vision.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Riboflavin and sodium iodide eye drops plus ultraviolet-A light treatment
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a less painful, faster-recovery treatment to stop keratoconus from getting worse and help preserve vision.
What could go wrong
This is a phase 3 trial, but results are not yet published. The treatment may not work for everyone, and there are risks like infection or corneal haze.
