Can a targeted radiation boost slow advanced lung cancer?
NCT ID NCT07135882
First seen Jul 31, 2026 ยท Last updated Jul 31, 2026
Summary
This trial is testing whether giving radiotherapy to the main lung tumour, in addition to standard chemotherapy or immunotherapy, can reduce cancer spread and help people with metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer live longer. Around 420 adults with newly diagnosed stage IV lung cancer that has spread to up to three organ systems will be randomly assigned to receive standard drug therapy alone or with upfront radiotherapy. The study will also look at side effects, quality of life, and cost-effectiveness to see if this combined approach is worth adopting widely.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Radiotherapy to the primary lung tumour, given alongside standard chemotherapy or immunotherapy
- What this could lead to
- If it works, adding radiotherapy to standard drug therapy could slow cancer spread, extend life, and improve well-being for people with metastatic lung cancer.
- What could go wrong
- This is a large phase III trial, but radiotherapy to the chest can cause side effects like inflammation or damage to nearby organs. It may not improve overall survival or quality of life for everyone.
