Blood clot vs sponge: which heals wisdom teeth better?

NCT ID NCT07530068

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether placing platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) made from the patient's own blood or an absorbable collagen sponge into the socket after wisdom tooth removal improves healing. Twenty-nine healthy adults with impacted lower wisdom teeth on both sides took part. Each side received one of the two treatments, and the researchers measured bone healing, pain, and swelling afterward.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and absorbable collagen sponge

What this could lead to

If PRF proves better, it could become a standard way to improve healing and reduce pain after wisdom tooth extraction.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study with only 29 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The benefits of PRF over collagen sponge may be minor.
