Antibiotics before infection: a new strategy to protect ICU patients?

NCT ID NCT07203638

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether giving antibiotics early can prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in adults on breathing machines. One hundred participants will receive either the antibiotic cefepime or a placebo for two days. The goal is to see if this approach reduces the number of patients who develop pneumonia during their first week on a ventilator.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Beta lactam antibiotics (cefepime)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide a simple way to prevent a common and dangerous lung infection in patients on breathing machines.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial. The antibiotics may not prevent pneumonia and could lead to side effects or antibiotic resistance.
