Can a simple stitch help twins stay in the womb longer?
NCT ID NCT07372495
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two approaches to prevent preterm birth in women carrying twins who have a short cervix. One group gets a cervical stitch (cerclage) plus vaginal progesterone, while the other gets progesterone alone. Researchers will track which group has fewer births before 28 weeks, aiming to find the best way to protect these babies.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
cervical cerclage (a stitch to close the cervix) and vaginal progesterone (hormone medication)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could give doctors a better way to prevent early delivery in twin pregnancies, reducing health risks for babies.
What could go wrong
This is a mid-stage trial with 260 participants, so results may not apply to all. The procedure carries small risks like infection or bleeding, and the combination may not be more effective than progesterone alone.
