Zapping the brain after stroke may stop pain before it starts

NCT ID NCT07202455

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a gentle electrical brain stimulation technique called tDCS, given alongside standard rehab, can prevent the development of chronic neuropathic pain after a stroke. Sixty adults who recently had a stroke will receive either real or sham tDCS for 10 sessions. Researchers will then check if they develop pain 6 months later.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) device

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple, non-drug way to prevent chronic pain after a stroke.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study (60 people) testing a prevention approach, so results may not apply widely. The treatment is non-invasive but may not be effective for everyone.
