Could a vitamin before surgery prevent a common complication?
NCT ID NCT07597096
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether taking vitamin D3 along with calcium for a week before total thyroidectomy prevents symptomatic low calcium levels after surgery better than calcium alone. 124 adults with multinodular goiter will be randomly assigned to one of the two groups. After surgery, they will be monitored for symptoms and blood calcium levels for 14 days.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- calcium carbonate and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol)
- What this could lead to
- If adding vitamin D3 works better, it could become a simple, low-cost way to prevent a common complication after thyroid surgery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial (124 people) that hasn't started yet. The benefit of adding vitamin D3 may be small or none, and results may not apply to all patients.
