Vacuum sponge aims to stop dangerous leaks after cancer surgery

Summary

This study is testing if a special vacuum sponge can prevent a dangerous complication called an anastomotic leak after surgery for esophageal cancer. The sponge is placed inside the patient where the stomach and esophagus are reconnected and applies gentle suction. Researchers will observe 44 patients to see if this preventive treatment reduces leaks and other serious complications.
