Summary

This large study tested whether two simple treatments could prevent serious kidney problems in high-risk patients undergoing common imaging procedures called angiography. Researchers compared intravenous sodium bicarbonate to standard saline and an oral antioxidant (NAC) to a placebo in over 5,000 patients with existing kidney issues. The goal was to see if these treatments could reduce deaths, need for dialysis, or lasting kidney damage within 90 days after the procedure.
