New screening strategy aims to catch colorectal cancer early in younger veterans

NCT ID NCT07071454

First seen Jul 01, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a multilevel screening program can increase colorectal cancer screening rates among Veterans aged 45-49, an age group now recommended for screening due to rising early-onset cases. Participants are randomly assigned to receive a patient education letter and phone calls, a provider notification, both, or standard care. The goal is to see if these nudges boost screening participation and help prevent colorectal cancer.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could increase early detection and prevention of colorectal cancer in younger Veterans, potentially reducing deaths from the disease.

What could go wrong

The trial is relatively small (536 participants) and focuses on a specific population (Veterans), so results may not apply broadly. The intervention's effectiveness depends on participation and follow-through.
