New combo aims to stop pain before it starts in breast cancer surgery

NCT ID NCT07197684

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether adding an ultrasound-guided nerve block (Pecs block) to a ketamine infusion can prevent chronic pain after breast cancer surgery. 120 women scheduled for mastectomy will be randomly assigned to receive either ketamine alone or ketamine plus the nerve block. They will be followed for 6 months to see how many develop long-term pain.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Ketamine

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a simple way to prevent long-term pain after breast cancer surgery, improving quality of life for many women.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial (120 participants) comparing two approaches, so results may not apply to everyone. The nerve block adds a procedure with its own small risks.
