New surgical technique aims to stop debilitating arm swelling before it starts

NCT ID NCT03941756

Summary

This study is testing whether performing a special surgical connection, called a lymphovenous bypass, at the same time as standard underarm lymph node removal can prevent a painful and chronic side effect called lymphedema (arm swelling). The research involves 252 adults with advanced breast cancer or melanoma who are at high risk for developing this swelling. Patients are randomly assigned to either receive the new bypass procedure during their cancer surgery or to receive the standard surgery alone, and then followed for 18 months to see if the bypass prevents swelling.
