Simple clinic change could prevent TB in thousands of HIV patients

NCT ID NCT04466488

First seen Apr 03, 2026 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 8 times

Summary

This study tested a simple change in how clinics prescribe TB prevention medicine to people with HIV. Instead of doctors having to choose to prescribe it, the new approach made TB prevention the automatic option unless the doctor decided to opt out. Over 50,000 adults in South Africa took part, and the goal was to see if this 'choice architecture' could dramatically increase the number of people receiving life-saving TB preventive therapy.
