First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested a new way to help young men who have sex with men (ages 18-30) take their daily HIV prevention pills consistently. Participants provided a urine sample that was tested right away for the HIV prevention drug, and then received a short counseling session based on the results. The goal was to see if this approach was acceptable and could improve long-term adherence. The study enrolled 63 participants and has been completed.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Motivational interviewing counseling and point-of-care urine tenofovir test
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could help young men who have sex with men stay on track with their daily HIV prevention pills, reducing new HIV infections.
What could go wrong
This was a small, completed study with only 63 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The intervention is behavioral and may not work for all individuals.
