Pre-surgery boot camp may slash hernia operation risks
NCT ID NCT07316426
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a home-based program of exercise, weight loss, and health optimization before ventral hernia surgery can lower the chance of complications. 130 adults with hernias 4-8 cm wide will be randomly assigned to either the prehabilitation program or standard care. Researchers will track complications at 3 and 12 months after surgery, and also study tissue samples to understand how the program affects healing.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- prehabilitation programme (home-based exercise, weight loss, and comorbidity management)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this program could reduce complications after ventral hernia surgery, leading to faster recovery and fewer post-surgical problems.
- What could go wrong
- This is a relatively small, early-stage trial (130 participants) testing a behavioural program, so results may not apply to all patients. The program requires significant patient commitment and may not be feasible for everyone.
