Summary

Researchers are studying whether a mother's physical activity during pregnancy affects her child's growth and development. The trial enrolls women with obesity who are less than 12 weeks pregnant and not currently exercising. Participants follow an exercise program while researchers track birth weight, body fat, and metabolism in the children for two years, along with the mothers' insulin sensitivity and inflammation.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
a structured prenatal exercise program
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that exercise during pregnancy helps lower a child's risk of obesity later in life.
What could go wrong
The trial may not prove that exercise changes infant growth or metabolism, and many other factors affect childhood obesity. Exercise during pregnancy carries some risks, so participants need medical clearance.
