Could a few weeks of pre-surgery weight training boost hip replacement recovery?
NCT ID NCT07048080
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a supervised resistance exercise program, done for 2 weeks before and 12 weeks after total hip replacement, improves muscle mass and strength in adults aged 60 and older with severe hip osteoarthritis. Participants are randomly assigned to either the exercise program or standard rehabilitation. The study also looks at biological markers in blood and tissue samples to understand how the body responds to exercise.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
resistance exercise training
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that a short course of strength training before and after hip replacement helps older adults recover muscle and function better than standard care.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with 70 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The exercise program is demanding and may be hard for some to complete.
