Prepping before spine surgery may cut complications in seniors
NCT ID NCT06140797
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether a pre-surgery health optimization program (prehabilitation) combined with enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) can reduce complications in elderly patients undergoing spinal fusion. 164 participants were randomly assigned to receive either the PREERAS program or standard care. The program includes risk assessment and targeted support before surgery, followed by ERAS care after. The main goal was to measure overall complications using the Comprehensive Complication Index.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Multimodal prehabilitation (pre-surgery risk assessment and targeted interventions) combined with enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) care
What this could lead to
If successful, this program could become a standard approach to reduce complications and speed recovery for elderly patients undergoing spine surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a completed study with 164 participants, so results are available but may not apply to all hospitals or patient groups. The intervention is complex and may be hard to implement widely.
