Simple score could spot deadly infection in cirrhosis patients
NCT ID NCT07024355
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study will test a new scoring system (Mansoura score) to predict a serious bacterial infection called spontaneous bacterial peritonitis in people with liver cirrhosis and fluid buildup in the belly. Researchers will enroll 250 adults to see how well the score identifies who needs early antibiotics. The goal is to start treatment faster and reduce illness and death.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this scoring system could help doctors quickly identify liver cirrhosis patients who need antibiotics for a serious infection, potentially reducing deaths.
What could go wrong
This is an early observational study, not a treatment trial. The scoring system may not be accurate enough in real-world settings, and results may not apply to all patients.
