Neck ultrasound may predict anesthesia danger
NCT ID NCT07565025
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at whether measuring the collapsibility of the internal jugular vein in the neck using ultrasound can predict low blood pressure after general anesthesia. Researchers will measure the vein in 42 adults before gallbladder surgery and track blood pressure changes right after anesthesia starts. If the measurement works, it could be a quick, safe way to spot high-risk patients.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Internal Jugular Vein Collapsibility Index measurement via ultrasound
What this could lead to
If successful, this could give doctors a simple, non-invasive way to identify patients at risk of low blood pressure during anesthesia, helping prevent complications.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early study with only 42 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The measurement may not reliably predict low blood pressure in practice.
